The Sound Studies Group is an international academic team dedicated to sound studies across disciplines, regions, and institutions. From theory to practice, it explores all things related to sound. It also operates a Sound Lab in the School of Design, SUSTech Shenzhen.

Shijiao is working at the intersection of history of biomedical technology and sound studies. Her research focuses on the development of stethoscopes and auscultation during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. At SUSTech, she tracked how the visual-centered epistemology deep-rooted in western medicine stimulated auscultation and the stethoscope. Following this, her current research examines how different desires of the doctors, patients and instrument makers shaped the various designs of the stethoscope emerged during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
