This is the Sound Studies Group, a loose and idependent group of likeminded sharing an interest for researching various aspects of the world through the lens of sound. The group is led by Dr. Qiushi Xu who is an assistant professor at the SUSTech School of Design in Shenzhen, and Dr. Marcel Zaes Sagesser who is Academic Director of Audio and Visual Media at St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences, Austria. 

Our research focuses on sound in relationship with technology, the environment, and human listening. It includes sound technology, sound studies, philosophy of science and technology, humanities research, sound design, spatial audio, interactive audio, and creative media. The output of this team is published in prestigious international journals and proceedings, at international conferences, and in exhibitions and concert halls.

Qiuya Xiang (Angela)





Qiuya XIANG (Angela) is a researcher working on objective and subjective assessments of the urban soundscape. She explores the effects of soundscapes on human sleep, stress, and hearing, conducts spatial data analysis based on GIS, and develops predictive models based on artificial intelligence. She is also committed to researching the therapeutic effects of sound. Qiuya now is a PhD student in the Faculty of Applied Engineering at the University of Antwerp. And she obtained a Master of Design in Transitional Environment Design from the School of Design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. In 2023 and 2024, she worked as a full-time research assistant at the SUSTech School of Design in the research teams of Mirna Zordan and Marcel Sagesser. She is now an external collaborator of the Sound Studies Group, partaking in some of the research activities and publications.
